It's 3:30am on a Monday morning over here. I've done a lot since the last time I reported in. I went to the major ghettoes and ate pig's feet, intestines, and tongue. Delicious! No, not really. But I'm open to trying everything. I'll never eat it again, of course. I saw some short indie films last night because there's a HK Film Festival going on. 4 sucked, 2 good. Gonna go check out the museum, university, and carnival soon. I walked one of the beaches and it was really pretty. Been drinking a lot of beer every night to cure ... umm... what do you call it in English?... "hot breath". Whatever. Over here, the drinking age is 18. I've eaten at 32194723 restaurants and stands and cafes because people here never stop eating. Every hour, on the hour. No, haven't tried the "stinky tofu" yet. Nor the eggettes. But soon!
Interesting Things I've Learned:
1. Zyber Cafe is where you wanna go for the internet and comp games. Cyber Cafe is where you wanna go for the porn internet and porn comp games.
2. There's McCafe next to almost every McDonald's. There's also a McGiftShop for your McToys and other McGifts. They have McFishBites. Oh, and fried chicken.
3. "Baw-high Guy", inotherwords "tennis shoe street", contains blocks and blocks of stores that are dedicated to selling shoes, shoes, shoes, and shoes only. Maybe one or two pairs of socks.
4. Many stores are 24hours. That's why no one ever sleeps cuz they can eat/hangout whenever. At midnight the streets are still crowded. In fact, this Internet Cafe, or uhhh Zyber Cafe is 24 hours.
5. Filipino women are popular as maids or caretakers here. They work 6 days a week. On Sundays, it's their day-off so there are usually a gazillion filipino women out in the streets doing their shopping or whatever leisure activity. Otherwise, you hardly see anyone un-Chinese during the other days. I didnt see one Filipino male.
6. Tapioca (or Boba) is not popular. It exists, but people don't feign for it like we girls do in San Francisco.
7. Jeans that are wide enough at the bottom to cover the shoes..... not cool. Right now (at least I observed), the "in"-thing is to wear almost straight-legged jeans. Girls like to wear longass sweaters here, at least for right now.
8. Chucks are like, $10 US here.
9. They have chinese versions of American magazines. For instance, there's Cosmopolitan, but instead of mostly Hollywood celebrities, it would mostly have Chinese celebs. But for some reason, they don't have a spell-checker even though it's sort of an international magazine that's on every newsstand. They mis-spell everything, as if grammar means nothing to them. They spelled Andy Warhol incorrectly, for example.
10. Disco. Not rave, not party, not club. It's called DISCO.
11. K-bars. They're quite popular. You drink and sing karaoke.
12. When you eat at any lower-end place and there's no room for your party at one table, half of you might have to sit at someone else's table. Like, this one day me and 3 other people were getting some lunch. It was really busy at this one place. There was one table which had room for 2, and so two of us sat down and ate with that stranger. It's completely typical. So long as there is space, you will have to occupy it even if it means to split up with your friends.
Okay, so I could be exaggerating on some stuff since this is only from my perspective. It might not apply in some other places, for instance, the thing about Zyber VS Cyber. But it sure as hell was interesting when I heard about it.
Until next time, I hope everything is well in the bay area for every one of you. |
